This is a remake of 'Freedom Isn't So Far Away'. It's not the best picture I've ever taken but it's certainly better than the original, which you can find here. [link]
Today, I can't walk. Something is wrong with my leg, so this was extremely difficult to take.
Although I have seen photos and renderings of butterflies used to represent freedom many timesbefore, I really love this piece a lot. The timing, lighting, details and angles of the shot all come into play. The diagonal angle of the jar makes entrapment seem further away, and I think that the butterfly facing the viewer makes the freedom feel more personal. The fact that its body is tilted upward lends implied optimism; it is flying toward better things, away from captivity, away from being grounded or stuck. I also appreciate the lighting behind the butterfly's wings because it amplies its beauty and fragility. This piece evokes a sense of timelessness.
