This is my new betta fish Wednesday, in his own little fish-bowl world.

How many gallons is that fish bowl? I hope you have upgraded him. Bettas need at least a 5 gallon tank to thrive in. Along with a variety of plants and caves. It is also recommended that they have a heater, especially in cold areas, as well as a filter if you want to do less frequent water changes.

When I bought him the person at the store told me it was just fine. It's about a gallon tank, and I change the water regularly.

I have heard a lot of people at pet stores saying that. Seems like a lot of misinformation going around. Nearly all experienced betta owners will tell you that anything below a 2.5 gallon is not suitable for a fish to thrive in.

Sure a betta can "live" in a 1 gallon tank, but it's unlikely that they would thrive, even with regular maintenance. It's just like how a human "could live" in a closet for their whole life with proper maintenance, but they surely wouldn't thrive.

I'd recommend upgrading the tank to at least a 2.5. It's actually shameful that petstores sell small bowls. I know Italy and Sweden I believe has banned fish bowls. I keep my betta in a 5 gallon with 2 caves for her to explore, and 6 plants. She also has a heater and a filter. (The filter I don't really use much because it's pretty powerful and blows her around >.>)
